Natacha Merritt (b. 1977, San Francisco) is an artist, writer and biologist. At age 20, her intimate and explicit series of portraits and self-portraits documenting her sexual history caused a sensation when she published them on her website www.digitalgirly.com. Her first book, Digital-Diaries (2000, Taschen), an erotic exploration at the dawn of the digital era, quickly became a critically acclaimed international best-seller, shifting over 300,000 copies and being featured in publications as diverse as The Observer, Playboy, The Wall Street Journal and Rolling Stone.

Following the spectacular success of the book, Merritt embarked on a series of diverse art projects and high-profile collaborations. She spoke at conferences as diverse as Ars Electronica on Next Sex: Sex in the Age of Procreative Superfluousness or the design conference AGideas (Melbourne, Australia). In 2000 she starred, shot and edited D-life (heralded as one of the first Internet reality miniseries) with two fellow artists, in collaboration with Heavy.com (later picked up by Warner Bros). From 2003-2004, Merritt was invited to be one of the creators for the Cirque du Soleil show Zumanity (NYNY Hotel and Casino), an exploration of sensuality and peak human performance, for which she created large-scale multimedia projections from erotic images she had captured of the performers.

In her now-classic books The Sexual Politics of Meat and The Pornography of Meat, Carol Adams analyzes similarities in the presentation of meat products (or the animals they come from) and women’s bodies. She particularly draws attention to sexualized fragmentation–the presentation of body parts of animals in ways similar to sexualized poses of women–and what she terms “anthropornography,” or connecting the eating of animals to the sex industry.

Este sábado 4 de febrero el gran Warbear y la grandísima Katrien Jacobs presentan la charla/screening “Porn, Patriotism and Paranoia on the Chinese Internet” en el Transmediale 2012. La cosa viene a cuento del último libro publicado por Katrien sobre el porno y la censura en internet, y en China:

Parece una noticia de El Mundo Today, pero no, por lo visto es una propuesta real. Cómo no se les había ocurrido antes. Atención a uno se sus propósitos: “El propósito del Porno Cristiano no es proveer material para las fantasí­as de individuos que lo usan para su propia gratificación. Independientemente de que la masturbación en si misma no es mala, el Porno Cristiano se usa para enriquecer las relaciones sexuales entre creyentes. Por ejemplo en el caso de que un hombre necesite ser mejor instruido sobre como satisfacer a su esposa oralmente, o si una mujer necesita ayuda en cuanto a su sexualidad para ser mas abierta a los deseos de su marido”

Las mujeres necesitan ayuda para estar más abiertas a los deseos de sus maridos: Porno patriarcal cristiano, podrían llamarlo así.

Estoy viendo una peli porno (por cierto, buenísima, se llama Portrait of a Call Girl) y me pregunto si me acordaré. Porque llevo una época tan poco activa sexualmente entre muertes, mudanzas y rupturas que esta noche casi que me he sorprendido al ver la peli. La escena en la que ella se pasea en bolas, con esos guantes y esas medias de látex negro, alrededor del business man intentando distraerle, no tiene precio. El tipo está con el ordenador, trabajando, muy serio. Y ella intenta distrarle, pero está difícil porque el señor es muy duro y no le hace ni caso. Pedazo de sádico. Y ese salón tan digno y luminoso.

El tipo no me convence en absoluto, pero Belladonna está fantástica, como siempre. Habla también de como la maternidad le hace ver la pornografía. Maternidad por todos lados. Mañana me voy a asistir el parto de mi mejor amiga. Me hace mucha ilusión ver en un pornográfico primerísimo primer plano lo que puede llegar a hacer un coño. Espero que haya mucho placer, yo pondré todo de mi parte para que así sea.

Madison Young detecta “un nuevo nivel de control, potenciación y conciencia” en la industria del cine para adultos, una conciencia que “es parte del movimiento del sexo positivo y del porno feminista”. No es esnobismo, asegura, sino un nuevo ecosistema que crea “un espectro de diversidad, comunicación, placer y autenticidad que ha estado ausente de manido porno fast-food”.

For my first director profile, I have picked someone who initiated a major transition in my life, and has taught me an incredible amount about gender, sexuality, and viewing relations. Mason, or Sam No as she sometimes goes by, is a female director specializing in rough gonzo, yet with a remarkable ability to cast and shoot her movies in a manner that is truly electric, beautiful, and often strangely romantic. Her films literally shine, through outstanding framing and production values, and occasionally oil on asses.

There really isn’t that much information on Mason’s upbringing; what there is can be found in a chapter she wrote for Carly Milne’s edited collection, Naked Ambition: Women Who Are Changing Pornography (2005). This was where I first heard of Mason, and I read her chapter with great interest – she was obviously an extremely intelligent woman who was dedicated to exploring female sexuality – and more particularly, her own sexuality – through her films.

Turned off by certain aspects of porn, predominantly what she perceived to be degrading treatment and representation of women, Mason nevertheless found herself “drawn to it out of sexual curiosity” and after taking some courses in feminist theory at college, she reconsidered her initial assumptions about the genre: “I started to consider that the issues I had with pornography were simply reflections of the way society treats women generally. I started to feel that all of the guilt I felt when viewing porn was predicated on my own discomfort with being a sexual woman.”
